LOS ANGELES — Willie Davis, a speedy center fielder who collected two World Series rings, three Gold Gloves and was a two-time All-Star during his 14 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died. He was 69.

“He was beloved by generations of Dodger fans and remains one of the most talented players ever to wear the Dodger uniform. Having spent time with him over the past six years, I know how proud he was to have been a Dodger. He will surely be missed and our sincere thoughts are with his children during this difficult time,” Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said in a statement.

Thailand

BANGKOK – Thailand’s government yesterday agreed to impose the Internal Security Act ahead of protests this weekend, vowing to use “all means” to stop violence by backers of ousted Premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The security act will be imposed from March 11 to 23.

Among the security measures is the banning of farm vehicles from the capital, in an apparent move to block the movement of protesters from Mr Thaksin’s heartland in the rural north.

Facet Biotech

NEW YORK — Drug and medical products company Abbott Laboratories said Tuesday it will buy Facet Biotech Corp. for about $450 million in cash, expanding the company’s access to biotechnology drugs, including a potential treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Facet and its partner Biogen Idec plan to move the potential multiple sclerosis drug daclizumab into late-stage development in the second quarter. Facet also has potential cancer treatments in various stages of development with other partners.

Pakistan Cricket

Former Pakistan captains Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf have been banned from the national cricket team indefinitely after a dismal performance in Australia, the cricket board said Wednesday.

The punishment was recommended by a six-man committee set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to probe the December-February tour, in which Pakistan lost the Test series 3-0, the one-day matches 5-0 and the only Twenty20 match.

British Airways

March 10 (Bloomberg) — British Airways Plc, AMR Corp.’s American Airlines and Iberia Lineas Aereas de Espana SA offered to give up takeoff and landing slots in the U.S and U.K. to win approval for their proposed trans-Atlantic alliance, the European Commission said today.

The EU antitrust agency said it’s testing the offer with rival companies to see if the plan allays concerns that the coordination of operations and marketing on trans-Atlantic routes would hurt competition.

2008 Toyota Prius

EL CAJON, Calif. — Before he called 911, James Sikes says he reached down with his hand to loosen the “stuck” accelerator on his 2008 Toyota Prius, his other hand on the steering wheel. The pedal didn’t move.

“My car can’t slow down,” he began when a California Highway Patrol dispatcher answered his call.
